Coast Guard: Offshore oil rig in Gulf of Mexico explodes

Associated Press

09/02/10 4:30 PM EDTNEW ORLEANS, LA. —

An oil platform exploded and caught fire Thursday off the Louisiana coast, spreading a mile-long oil sheen into the Gulf of Mexico. All 13 crew members were rescued from the water in their protective “Gumby suits.”

It was the second such disaster in the gulf in less than five months. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Coklough said the sheen, about 100 feet wide, was spotted near the platform, 200 miles west of the site of BP’s massive spill. Firefighting vessels were battling the flames.

The company that owns the platform, Houston-based Mariner Energy, did not know what caused the blast, which was reported by a helicopter flying over the area. Seven Coast Guard helicopters, two airplanes and three cutters were dispatched to the scene.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Mariner officials told him there were seven active production wells on the platform, and they were shut down shortly after the fire….Read more washingtonexaminer.com

How does one discredit the massive back-to-the-values-that-made-this-country-great rally in Washington at the National Mall?

Easy. Call Glenn Beck, the leader and organizer of the rally, a “racist” — as does former Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean.

What makes Beck a racist? The question presupposes the need for a reason.

Ever heard of Journolist? Apparently, neither have network news anchors Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric and Brian Williams — none of whom saw fit to spend one second reporting on this astonishing story.

Journolist was a confidential Listserv of 400 members of the media. It included people from Time, The Huffington Post, The Guardian, The New Republic, The Nation and other outlets. No Journolist member was a conservative. (Liberals would give a confidential Listserv of conservative media a somewhat different name: The Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy.)

Journolist was founded and run by a Washington Post blogger. It was exposed by The Daily Caller and written about on NewsBusters.org and by Andrew Breitbart, who offered $100,000 for a complete Journolist archive. Shortly after this exposure, Journolist was shut down…..Read more at the Washington Examiner

Barack Obama Secures His Grip on the Oil Industry

Part I
Chavez in a Box—The Strings are Revealed Just when you thought it was safe to take that long-planned vacation to Caracas, President Hugo Chavez enters the media again, angry with America. This particular outburst from the bully by the sea alleges the U.S. government is plotting alongside Colombia to invade Venezuela. This latest accusation from Chavez comes on the heels of Columbia’s allegations that Venezuela is harboring rebel soldiers; namely, members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)…Canada Free Press

An indignant President Obama complained last week, “I can’t spend all of my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead.” Fine.

How about plastering a copy of his presidential oath of office there instead? The kowtowing commander-in-chief is in dire need of a daily reminder that his job is to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States” — not international law or global diktats.

Case in point: Last week, Obama’s State Department handed in America’s first-ever report to the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights in conjunction with something called the “Universal Periodic Review.” In short, the 29-page document is a self-aggrandizing report card touting the administration’s far-left domestic and foreign policy initiatives for the world’s approval.

The report boasts of racial and gender bean-counting in the executive branch; Justice Department outreach to Muslim grievance groups opposed to post-9/11 security measures; teachers’ union payoffs in the federal stimulus law; continuing commitment to closing the Guantanamo detention facility for enemy combatants; and the illusory lifesaving effects of Obamacare on minorities through “expanding community health centers” (which have yet to be built, but not that it matters in our Nobel Peace Prize-winning president’s age of post-achievement)…..Read more at the Washington Examiner

Feds sue Arizona sheriff in civil rights probe

By JACQUES BILLEAUD, Associated Press Writer Jacques Billeaud, Associated Press Writer Thu Sep 2, 12:43 pm ET

PHOENIX – The U.S. Justice Department sued Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Thursday, saying the Arizona lawman refused for more than a year to turn over records in an investigation into allegations his department discriminates against Hispanics.

The lawsuit calls Arpaio and his office’s defiance “unprecedented,” and said the federal government has been trying since March 2009 to get officials to comply with its probe of alleged discrimination, unconstitutional searches and seizures, and having English-only policies in his jails that discriminate against people with limited English skills.

Arpaio had been given until Aug. 17 to hand over documents it first asked for 15 months ago.

Arpaio’s attorney, Robert Driscoll, declined immediate comment on the lawsuit, saying he had just received it and hadn’t yet conferred with his client.

Arpaio’s office had said it has fully cooperated in the jail inquiry but won’t hand over additional documents into the examination of the alleged unconstitutional searches because federal authorities haven’t said exactly what they were investigating.

It’s the latest action against Arizona by the federal government, which earlier sued the state to stop its strict new immigration law that requires police officers to question people about their immigration status.

“The actions of the sheriff’s office are unprecedented,” said Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the department’s civil rights division. “It is unfortunate that the department was forced to resort to litigation to gain access to public documents and facilities.”

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Phoenix and names Arpaio, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and the county.

Arizona’s new law — most of which a federal judge has put on hold — mirrors many of the policies Arpaio has put into place in the greater Phoenix area, where he set up a hot line for the public to report immigration violations, conducts crime and immigration sweeps in heavily Latino neighborhoods and frequently raids workplaces for people in the U.S. illegally.

Arpaio believes the inquiry is focused on his immigration sweeps, patrols where deputies flood an area of a city — in some cases heavily Latino areas — to seek out traffic violators and arrest other offenders…read more Yahoo news

(CNSNews.com) – On Jan. 7, 2009, less than two weeks before Barack Obama was sworn in as president, a Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) report indicated that up until that date there had been 18 confirmed and 43 suspected cases of detainees who had been released from the Guantanamo Bay prison and who had returned to terrorism. The DIA released the report to CNSNews.com in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

An earlier DIA report (dated July 10, 2006), also released to CNSNews.com, had specifically predicted that some Guantanamo detainees from Afghanistan and Pakistan, if released, would return to fight U.S. forces in that region. “Former detainees who return to terrorism will continue to gravitate to their roots with those from Afghanistan/Pakistan returning to local anti-coalition activity,” said the report…Read more CNSNews.com

By Nicholas Ballasy, Video Reporter
(CNSNews.com) – Christina Romer, the departing chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisors said America’s economic “turnaround has been insufficient.” She added that the current 9.5 percent unemployment rate is “an unacceptable level by any metric.” Romer also admitted that her prediction that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) would bring unemployment down to 8 percent was “so far off.”….read more CNSNews.com

Bureau of Land Management sign in Arizona, “DANGER – PUBLIC WARNING, TRAVEL NOT RECOMMENDED, Visitors May Encounter Armed Criminals and Smuggling Vehicles Traveling at High Rates of Speed.”

(CNSNews.com)Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said requests by Arizona law enforcement personnel and Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) for 3,000 National Guard troops along the state’s border with Mexico have been answered so far with 1 percent of that number deployed there this week.

“We have a whopping 30 [National Guard troops] this week that are showing up,” Babeu told CNSNews.com. “It’s less than a half-hearted measure designed to fail.”

But the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has placed 15 signs along a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 8 that links San Diego with Phoenix and Tucson warning travelers of drug cartels and human trafficking operations.

“DANGER – PUBLIC WARNING, TRAVEL NOT RECOMMENDED,” read the signs placed along Interstate 8. “Visitors May Encounter Armed Criminals and Smuggling Vehicles Traveling at High Rates of Speed. Stay Away From Trash, Clothing, Backpacks, and Abandoned Vehicles.” ….read more CNSNews.com
