AP Standards Center issues staff advisory on covering New York City mosque

Associated Press Deputy Managing Editor for Standards and Production Tom Kent sent the following note to the staff about covering the New York City mosque story:

Aug. 19, 2010

Here is some guidance on covering the NYC mosque story, with assists from Chad Roedemeier in the NYC bureau and Terry Hunt in Washington:

1. We should continue to avoid the phrase “ground zero mosque” or “mosque at ground zero” on all platforms. (We’ve very rarely used this wording, except in slugs, though we sometimes see other news sources using the term.) The site of the proposed Islamic center and mosque is not at ground zero….read more Big Journalism

The Separation of Islamophilia from State

By on 8.19.10 @ 6:09AM

By modern secularist standards, Barack Obama’s boosterism for Islam violates the “separation between Church and state.” Had George W. Bush held a rosary and modest fish dinner at the White House to mark the beginning of Lent, the ACLU left would have freaked out. But these same secularists didn’t mind Barack’s “Iftar dinner” last Friday night.

That is, until he wimped out on his endorsement of the Ground Zero mosque. Now his dinner looks to them more like the production of Ishtar, as finger-to-the-wind Dems cravenly..read more The American Spectator

Worse Than Carter

By on 8.19.10 @ 6:09AM

WASHINGTON — It is becoming apparent for all to see, that a man who made his name as a community organizer does not have the skills to be President of these United States. Maybe he could develop the requisite skills as a governor. Possibly, he could develop such skills were he to sit in the Senate for a couple of terms. Yet there are delicate sensitivities, the ability to listen, to stick by your guns, occasionally to remain reticent. These are the fundamentals of a leader, and President Barack Obama has demonstrated that he lacks all of them, most notably reticence. I now think it is clear even to Official Washington that President Obama is the worst president of modern times. President Jimmy Carter is redeemed….read more The American Spectator

Obama’s Point of No Return

By J.R. Dunn

There comes a moment in a failing presidency where the incumbent, through some single gesture, action, or statement, crosses a certain line from beyond which there is no return. Through his own will and behavior, he so underlines his failings, so frames his negative image, that no further action can ever erase it. Fate, accident, and circumstance have nothing to do with it. It is the president himself who puts the period at the end of his own sentence..read more American Thinker

The GOP’s Lost Brand

By Randall Hoven

This is not your father’s America, nor is it your father’s Republican Party. You have been betrayed. But if you call it betrayal, you won’t be called ungrateful; you’ll be called nuts — as in wingnuts.

Conservatives and liberals alike assume the U.S. is, or was before Obama, leader of the free world and a bastion of free-market economics. Conservatives griped that ObamaCare would be socialism, nationalizing one-seventh of the economy. Liberals griped that laissez-faire capitalism in the U.S. is what drove us, and then Europe, into the Great Recession…read more American Thinker

Race War A’Comin’?

By John Dale Dunn, MD

I was stunned a few weeks ago when a black professional colleague told me there were all-black cruises that featured speakers such as Louis Farrakhan. Mr. Farrakhan is a Muslim black nationalist, formerly a security officer, now successor to Elijah Mohammed of the Nation of Islam. He is a racist, an anti-Semite, and an anti American to the core.

Prosperous American blacks pay good money to go on a cruise with a racist like Louis Farrakhan? Mr. Farrakhan is more hateful than other race agitators, hustlers, and shakedown artists like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. He is in concert with the Congressional Black Caucus, who slavishly support communist regimes like Cuba and anti-American projects, who are angry at Whitey, but claim to be the conscience of the Congress. I couldn’t help but think, What would be the public outcry if there were all-white cruises with David Duke, or the formation of a Congressional White Caucus? But blacks can’t be racist in the new order of things…..read more American Thinker

The Civility Gap

By Bruce Walker

One of the unspoken truths of the political and ideological wars which rage around us is the civility gap between the left and conservatives. Anyone who has fought in these battles knows just what I mean.  To be sure, there are exceptions among conservatives, those who are not civil, but they receive no quarter from the broader conservative movement….read more American Thinker

Obama to Re-Clintonize Cuba Policy

By Humberto Fontova  Thursday, August 19, 2010

“The Obama administration is planning to expand opportunities for Americans to travel to Cuba.,” reports the New York Times this week. “The (Obama) policy…is meant to loosen restrictions on academic, religious and cultural groups that were adopted under President George Bush and return to the “people to people” policies followed under President Bill Clinton….Those policies, officials said, fostered robust exchanges between the United States and Cuba, allowing groups … to share expertise as well as life experiences.”…read more Canada Free Press

Conservatives will have another chance….Now lead, don’t copy

By Dr. Laurie Roth  Thursday, August 19, 2010

As much as the left fights amongst itself over how to go more left and progressive,  the right also has its infighting and distractions.  Many of you just stay away from the madness to keep temporary peace at home or the workplace…….“I never discuss Religion, money and politics.”…read more Canada Free Press

Nearly Half of United States Considering Arizona-Style Immigration Legislation

Thursday, August 19, 2010

By Fred Lucas, Staff Writer

(AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin, File)

(CNSNews.com) – Twenty-two states are now in the process of drafting or seeking to pass legislation similar to Arizona’s law against illegal immigration. This is occurring despite the fact that the Obama administration has filed a lawsuit against the Arizona law and a federal judge has ruled against portions of that law – a ruling that is now being appealed…read more CNSNews.com

La Raza: Deporting 12 Million Illegal Aliens ‘Not a Realistic Solution’ and U.S. Should Stop Trying

Thursday, August 19, 2010
By Adam Cassandra
(CNSNews.com) – The United States cannot deport all 12 million illegal aliens in the United States and should stop trying, a spokeswoman for the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) told CNSNews.com last week.

“We have to recognize that our immigration system has been broken for 20 years and there are now 12 million people living and working and praying among us who are here without documents. Many have spouses who are citizens or children fighting for our country,” NCLR Immigration Field Coordinator A. Elena Lacayo said in an e-mail response to a question from CNSNews.com….read more CNSNews.com

Mosque Debate Divides Democrats, Especially in New York

Thursday, August 19, 2010
By Beth Fouhy, Associated Press

New York (AP) – As vulnerable congressional Democrats weigh how to respond to President Barack Obama’s statements on Muslims’ right to build a mosque near ground zero, those in New York and closest to the controversy are staying silent or scrambling away.

Democrats control both Senate seats and 27 of the state’s 29 Congressional districts, but analysts believe as many as eight House Democrats in the state may be headed to defeat this year. Republicans, hoping to ease Democrats’ grip on the state, insist the economy remains the major campaign issue but say the mosque flap could also help move voters their way…read more CNSNews.com

Poll: Growing Number of Americans Call Obama Muslim

Thursday, August 19, 2010
By Alan Fram, Associated Press

Washington (AP) – Americans increasingly are convinced — incorrectly — that President Barack Obama is a Muslim, and a growing number are thoroughly confused about his religion.

Nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, said they think Obama is Muslim, up from the 11 percent who said so in March 2009, according to a poll released Thursday. The proportion who correctly say he is a Christian is down to just 34 percent…read more CNSNews.com
