Will More Tax Dollars Go to Unions?

Posted by : Michele Bachmann at 4:12 PM

On the heels of last week’s $26 billion spending bill, of which much is going to public sector unions, a new union bailout bill may be gaining traction for discussion this fall.

In yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, we discovered why some lawmakers would put taxpayers on the hook for union retirement pensions:..read more Townhall.com Blog

Scathing Congress report slams Obama’s ‘covert, criminal activity’

President charged with illegally using taxpayer money to manipulate public

By Jerome R. Corsi

© 2010 WorldNetDaily

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued a scathing staff report today charging that the White House has “used the machinery of the Obama campaign to tout the president’s agenda through inappropriate and sometimes unlawful public relations and propaganda initiatives.”

An advance pre-publication copy of the report, shared by Issa’s Washington office with WND, accuses the White House of nothing short of criminal activity. It charges the Obama administration with violating federal laws to advance what the Government Accounting Office has characterized as an unlawful “covert campaign,” using federal resources “to activate a sophisticated propaganda and lobbying campaign.”..read more World Net Daily

A majority of those surveyed by Gallup disapproved of President Obama’s job performance for the first time.

According to the Gallup daily tracking poll released on Tuesday, 51 percent of U.S. adults said they disapproved of how Obama was handling his job, compared with 42 percent who approve.

The poll reflects a one-point change from Monday, when Obama’s disapproval number hit 50 percent for the first time.

Republicans were quick to point out the new number to further their argument that Obama is a liability to Democratic candidates in this fall’s midterm elections…read more The Hill

Double-digit jump in bankruptcies

Jay Heflin – 08/17/10 03:35 PM ET

Bankruptcy filings rose 20 percent in the 12-month period ending in June, according to the Administrative Office of the U.S Courts.
The over 1.5 million filings marks the highest number of bankruptcies to occur in a 12-month period since the bankruptcy reform act was enacted in 2005.

The legislation was intended to make it harder to file for bankruptcy by restricting the number of Chapter 7 filings, which forgive most debts, and pushing debtors to file Chapter 13, which requires some of the debt to be repaid. The bill created a means test to determine which filings could use which bankruptcy..…read more The Hill

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Tuesday that the failures at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were “avoidable” and that lawmakers must forge a bipartisan overhaul of the housing finance giants.

Congress and the Obama administration are at the beginnning of a debate on how to rewrite the housing finance system, with Geithner saying there is “no clear consensus” yet on how to reform Fannie and Freddie. The two mortgage finance giants were bailed out by taxpayers in 2008 after suffering massive losses as the housing market plummeted…read more The Hill

Cuba travel ban: White House poised to ease restrictions

The expected order from President Obama would not fully lift the Cuba travel ban, but it would ease the stricter rules put in place during the Bush years. Many expect an announcement by Labor Day.

By Howard LaFranchi, Staff writer / August 17, 2010

Washington

Expectations are rising that the Obama administration will move in the coming days to ease travel restrictions to Cuba.

The hubbub about an anticipated White House statement is leading to stepped-up speculation about areas of potential exchange and trade with the long-embargoed Caribbean island, such as energy development.

“Right now they [in the White House and the State Department] are just fine-tuning what they are going to be putting out,” says Sarah Stephens, executive director of the Center for Democracy in the Americas in Washington.

Insisting an executive order about Cuba travel “is a done deal,” Ms. Stephens says, “It’s going to look very much like what the conditions for travel were under President Clinton, with the emphasis on ‘people to people exchange’ ” and specific mention of religious and academic groups.

After that, she adds, “It will be interesting to see what happens around the edges, with business and other groups.”

The White House has been sending out trial balloons suggesting presidential action on Cuba travel – enough to get a reaction from Cuba hardliner Sen. Robert Menendez (D) of New Jersey, who issued a statement earlier this month saying, “This is not the time to ease the pressure on the Castro regime.”

President Obama’s action would not fully lift the ban on US travel to Cuba, but would instead ease restrictions in ways the administration considers to be consistent with US policy of encouraging democratic reforms and greater freedom on the communist island. Action by Mr. Obama would continue a pattern of reversing the tighter restrictions on travel implemented under the Bush administration…read more CSMonitor

Carly Fiorina widens lead over Barbara Boxer: All about jobs?

The California Senate race could hinge on perceptions of how Carly Fiorina and Barbara Boxer will approach the economy and job creation.

By Daniel B. Wood, Staff writer / August 16, 2010

Los Angeles

Sen. Barbara Boxer is losing ground to challenger Carly Fiorina in the race for California’s Senate seat, which is considered key to both political parties.

Fiorina showed a five-point lead (47 percent to 42 percent) in a SurveyUSA poll released Aug. 12. The poll surveyed 602 likely California voters between Aug. 9 and Aug. 11 and had a margin of error of 4.1 percent.

“The 2010 California Senate race is very important nationally,” says Carleton College political scientist Steven Schier. “If the GOP is to gain control of the Senate, they must win the California Senate race.”…read more CSMonitor

US breast cancer drug decision ‘marks start of death panels’

America’s health watchdog is considering revoking its approval of the drug Avastin for use on women with advanced breast cancer, leading to accusations that it will mark the start of ‘death panel’ drug rationing.

By Nick Allen, in Los Angeles and Andrew Hough

A decision to rescind endorsement of the drug would reignite the highly charged debate over US health care reform and how much the state should spend on new and expensive treatments.

Avastin, the world’s best selling cancer drug, is primarily used to treat colon cancer and was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2008 for use on women with breast cancer that has spread…read more  Telegraph co.Uk

Russian Scholar Warns Of ‘Secret’ U.S. Climate Change Weapon

By Ashley Cleek
As Muscovites suffer record high temperatures this summer, a Russian political scientist has claimed the United States may be using climate-change weapons to alter the temperatures and crop yields of Russia and other Central Asian countries.

In a recent article, Andrei Areshev, deputy director of the Strategic Culture Foundation, wrote, “At the moment, climate weapons may be reaching their target capacity and may be used to provoke droughts, erase crops, and induce various anomalous phenomena in certain countries.”

The article has been carried by publications throughout Russia, including “International Affairs,” a journal published by the Foreign Ministry and by the state-owned news agency RIA Novosti…read more rferl

Washington (CNN) — President Obama’s comments on a plan to build an Islamic center in the shadow of ground zero are not only giving opponents an opportunity to attack him but also reveal a messaging problem from the White House, a communications expert said.

“The danger here is an incoherent presidency,” said David Morey, vice chairman of the Core Strategy Group, who provided communications advice to Obama’s 2008 campaign. “Simpler is better, and rising above these issues and leading by controlling the dialogue is what the presidency is all about. So I think that’s the job they have to do more effectively as they have in the past [in the campaign].”….read more CNN

More than they have been at any other time in U.S. history, our First Amendment freedoms of speech and religion are in jeopardy. Dismantling America

Thomas Sowell

“We the people” are the familiar opening words of the Constitution of the United States– the framework for a self-governing people, free from the arbitrary edicts of rulers. It was the blueprint for America, and the success of America made that blueprint something that other nations sought to follow.

At the time when it was written, however, the Constitution was a radical departure from the autocratic governments of the 18th century. Since it was something so new and different, the reasons for the Constitution’s provisions were spelled out in “The Federalist,” a book written by three of the writers of the Constitution, as a sort of instruction guide to a new product…read more Townhall.com

Obama & State Takeover By Union: Syndicalism

By Kelly O’Connell  Sunday, August 15, 2010

Even moderately observant Americans realize Obama’s policies strongly favor unions. But why? Some believe simply because unions helped deliver his presidency. But, do more basic and sinister motives lurk beneath the surface? In Marxism, great emphasis is placed on use of unions to advance socialism. French historian of labor Michel Collinet claims… “The control of labor unions was, and still remains, the principle objective of Communist parties in industrialized countries.”..read more Canada Free Press

Washington’s Idea of Fiscal Restraint

It has been months now since the new healthcare reform bill was passed into law.  As is so typical, this massive piece of legislation was passed with a sense of urgency so acute that leadership declared America could not afford to wait until legislators, their staff and the general public had time to thoroughly read the bill.

The truth comes out eventually, however.  Much like the recently discovered exemption from Freedom of Information Act requirements for the SEC that was slipped into the equally massive and “urgent” financial reform bill, we are finally seeing what other insidiousness has been hiding in the fine print of the healthcare reform bill.  It seems that all provisions in this poorly written and poorly conceived monstrosity need to be repealed as soon as possible…read more Texas Straight Tal
